Syllabus
All students are required to take a physical education program of instruction under New York State law. The law requires ATTENDANCE and ACTIVE PARTICIPATION. Students must PASS 4 YEARS ( 8 semesters) ( 2 credits = .5 credit per semester) of Physical Education, Failure to do so will result in denial of graduation.
Behavioral Objectives:
Students are expected to:
1. Be present for class.
2. Be punctual.
3. Be prepared for activity.
4. Participate to the best of his/her ability.
5. Demonstrate respect for teachers, him/herself, other students and school property.
Grading Policy:
Grading in High School Physical Education will be graded on a 100% scale. Students will be assessed in each unit based on a daily rubric for attendance, preparedness, and effort during participation.
1. Present
- Students must attend class every day.
- Daily points can only be earned when students are physically present in class.
2. Prepared (4 Points)
- (1) point deduction for an unexcused late to class.
- Students must change for class daily.
- Students must be out of the locker room within the first 5 minutes of class. Students exiting the locker room after the first 5 minutes will lose (1) point.
- P.E. attire must be different from school attire.
- Sneakers, shorts/sweatpants, t-shirt/sweatshirt are REQUIRED.
3. Participation (6 points)
3A. Do Now (1 Point) – Warm-Up
- Students will actively engage in the warm- up.
- All electronics are off and away – 1st time a warning. (1) Point will be deducted for each offense after warning.
3B. Work Habits (5 Points) – Participation
- Students will actively engage in group discussion and work cooperatively with others.
- Students will use appropriate language throughout the class period.
- All electronics are off and away – 1st time a warning. (1) Point will be deducted for each offense after warning.
- Students will actively engage in their selected activity.
Expectations of Student Athletes:
It is the responsibility of the student athlete to communicate with your Physical Education teacher regarding missed classes due to an athletic event. Failure to do so will result in an unexcused absence for that day(s).
Make-up Policy:
All absences from class must be made up.
If a student is legally absent from school or class, he/she will have the opportunity to make up the absence.
Illegal absences/cuts cannot be made up.
If a student is unprepared for class he/she must make up the class to receive credit for that day.
Medical Policy:
Students must bring in a doctor’s note to the school nurse.
All medical excuses from class must be made up.
* Students MUST lock up all their belongings in the locker room. The student's must purchase their own lock.
Poughkeepsie High School is not responsible for any lost or stolen items.
